The Zollverein was a customs union of German states formed under the leadership of Prussia, which abolished tariffs on trade among its members and set a common tariff on goods from outside. It grew out of an earlier Prussian customs union and several regional ones and was supported by economists such as Friedrich List. At its creation it comprised most of the German states except Austria, and it grew over the following decades. By tying the member states together economically, and by encouraging the building of railways, it increased Prussian influence and is often seen as a step toward German unification under Prussian leadership, achieved in 1871. After unification the customs union was absorbed in the German Empire.
