Benjamin Harrison was born on 20 August 1833 in North Bend. The 23rd President of the United States, Harrison was the grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, and an Indiana lawyer who rose to brigadier general in the Civil War and later served as senator. He won the Electoral College in 1888 while losing the popular vote to Grover Cleveland. His administration signed the Sherman Antitrust Act, passed the high McKinley Tariff and saw six new states admitted to the Union in 1889 and 1890. He also supported a stronger navy and expanded pensions for veterans. Cleveland defeated him in the 1892 rematch.
