Founding of Yale University

1701

Yale University is a private research university in New Haven, Connecticut, and one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the United States. It was founded as the Collegiate School by a group of Congregationalist ministers, who wanted to train clergy and civic leaders, and it first met in Killingworth. It moved to New Haven in the 1710s and was renamed in honour of Elihu Yale, a merchant and former official of the East India Company who made a large donation. Over time it expanded into a broad university with professional schools of law, medicine and other fields. It is a member of the Ivy League and has educated several American presidents.
