The Kingdom of Prussia was a German state that began in 1701, when Elector Frederick III of Brandenburg crowned himself King Frederick I in Königsberg. It grew from the lands of Brandenburg and the Duchy of Prussia into one of the great powers of Europe, especially under Frederick the Great, who won Silesia and fought the Seven Years' War. After defeat by Napoleon in 1806, Prussia carried out major reforms, and it later led the unification of Germany under Otto von Bismarck. In 1871 the Prussian king became the German emperor, and Prussia was the largest state in the German Empire. The monarchy ended with the abdication of Wilhelm II in November 1918, and the state itself was abolished by the Allies in 1947.
