The University of Gottingen was founded by George II of Great Britain, who was also Elector of Hanover, and it opened a few years after its charter. It was designed as a modern institution that put emphasis on research and on freedom of teaching, and its library became one of the best in Europe. The university gained a leading reputation in the sciences and mathematics in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with figures such as Carl Friedrich Gauss, David Hilbert and Max Born, and its list of affiliated Nobel laureates is long. It suffered badly during the Nazi era, when many Jewish and dissenting scholars were dismissed.
