World Gymnastics, now the International Gymnastics Federation, known as FIG from its French name, is the governing body of the sport, founded in Liege by representatives of Belgium, France and the Netherlands. It started as the European Gymnastics Federation, with Nicolas Cuperus of Belgium as its first president, and took its present name in 1921 as other continents joined. It is one of the oldest international sports federations. It organises the world championships and sets the rules for the Olympic gymnastics events, including artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics and trampolining, as well as the scoring system, which was revised after judging controversies.
