The Kingdom of Romania was proclaimed when Prince Carol I of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen took the title of king, after Romania had gained full independence from the Ottoman Empire in the war of 1877 and 1878. Under Ferdinand I, the country joined the Allies in the First World War and emerged with Transylvania, Bessarabia and Bukovina, forming Greater Romania. Politics between the wars were turbulent, with the rise of the fascist Iron Guard and the royal dictatorship of Carol II. In the Second World War the country was under the rule of Ion Antonescu, who allied with Germany, until King Michael led a coup in 1944 that switched sides. After the war the communists forced Michael to abdicate, and the monarchy was abolished.
