Founding of World Council of Churches

23 August 1948

The World Council of Churches is an international fellowship of Christian churches, formed at an assembly in Amsterdam in the wake of the Second World War, from earlier movements seeking Christian unity. Its member churches include many Protestant, Anglican and Orthodox churches, and it has its headquarters in Geneva. The Catholic Church is not a member but sends observers and cooperates in some work. The council promotes dialogue between churches, theological discussion and joint action on issues such as peace, justice and the environment. It played a part in the struggle against apartheid, and it has faced criticism both from conservatives who oppose its political engagement and from those who find its progress on unity too slow.
