Founding of Villarreal CF

10 March 1923

Villarreal CF is a Spanish football club from Villarreal, a small town in the province of Castellón, in the Valencian Community. It was founded in the 1920s and spent most of its history in the lower divisions. In the late 1990s, with the backing of the businessman Fernando Roig, the owner of the Mercadona supermarket chain, the club rose to La Liga and became an unexpected force. It reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2006 and in 2022, and in 2021 won the UEFA Europa League, beating Manchester United in a penalty shoot-out. Villarreal is known as the Yellow Submarine, after its kit and a Beatles song, and plays at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
