Founding of University of Zurich

1833

The University of Zurich was founded in Switzerland after the liberal reforms of the 1830s in the canton of Zurich, and it was the first major European university to be established by a state and not by a monarch or the Church. From early in its history it admitted women to study, and from the 1860s it awarded doctorates to women, among the first in Europe. Notable scientists and thinkers have studied or taught there, including Albert Einstein, who gained his doctorate there in 1905, Carl Jung, who taught there, and Erwin Schrodinger, who developed his famous equation as a professor at Zurich. It is the largest university in Switzerland, with a wide range of subjects, and counts numerous Nobel laureates among its staff and alumni.
