Gustave Eiffel was born on 15 December 1832 in Dijon. A French engineer, Eiffel trained at the Ecole Centrale and built his reputation designing iron bridges and viaducts, among them the Maria Pia Bridge in Porto and the Garabit Viaduct. His company also built the metal skeleton of the Statue of Liberty. His most famous work is the tower that bears his name, erected for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, then the tallest structure in the world, and initially criticized by many artists before becoming the symbol of the city.
