The Kingdom of Greece was the Greek monarchy established with the support of the great powers after the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire. Its first king was the Bavarian prince Otto, who was deposed in 1862, and was succeeded by a Danish prince who became George I. The kingdom grew through the addition of the Ionian Islands, Thessaly and, after the Balkan Wars, Macedonia, Epirus and Crete. The disastrous war with Turkey in 1919 to 1922 and the exodus of Greeks from Asia Minor shook the monarchy. It was abolished in 1924, restored in 1935, and abolished again in 1973 by the military junta, a decision confirmed by a referendum after the return of democracy.
