The Bank of Montreal, often abbreviated BMO, is one of the largest banks in Canada and the country's oldest, set up by a group of Montreal merchants under a charter from the colonial authorities. It issued its own banknotes in the early years, as was usual for banks of the time, and it served as the government's banker for a long period. In the nineteenth century it helped finance the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway and grew with the Canadian economy, opening branches across the country. Later it expanded into the United States, where it operates through the former Harris Bank in Chicago and other acquisitions, and its business now spans personal banking, wealth management and investment banking.
