Founding of University of California, Los Angeles

23 May 1919

The University of California, Los Angeles, known as UCLA, started as the Southern Branch of the University of California, set up as a teacher-training college in the early twentieth century, and became a full campus of the University of California system with its own chancellor in the 1950s. It moved to its present site in the Westwood district in 1929. It is now one of the largest and most selective public universities in the United States, with strong programmes in medicine, engineering, film and the humanities. UCLA's athletic teams, the Bruins, have won many national championships, and its researchers took part in the first message sent over ARPANET in 1969.
