The Turkish War of Independence was fought by a nationalist movement against the Allied occupation of Anatolia and Istanbul after the Ottoman defeat in the First World War. It began when Mustafa Kemal, later Ataturk, landed at Samsun and organised resistance against the terms of the Treaty of Sevres, which would have carved up much of the Ottoman heartland. The nationalists, based in Ankara, fought Armenian, French and especially Greek forces, whose advance was halted at the Battle of the Sakarya and routed in 1922. The sultanate was abolished, the Treaty of Lausanne recognised the new borders of Turkey, and the Republic was proclaimed in October 1923.
