Founding of United Nations Development Programme

1965

The United Nations Development Programme was created in 1965 by merging two earlier UN bodies, the Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance and the Special Fund. It is headquartered in New York and works in a large number of countries to support development in areas such as poverty reduction, democratic governance, crisis recovery and the environment. Since 1990 it has published the annual Human Development Report, which introduced the Human Development Index, a ranking of countries by life expectancy, education and income instead of economic output alone. The programme is funded by voluntary contributions from governments, and it also helps coordinate the UN development work within each country it serves.
