Death of Audrey Hepburn

20 January 1993

Audrey Hepburn died on 20 January 1993 in Tolochenaz, aged 63. A British actress born in Brussels, Hepburn spent the Second World War in occupied Netherlands and trained as a ballet dancer before turning to acting. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her first major film role, as a princess in Roman Holiday in 1953, and later starred in Sabrina, Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade and My Fair Lady. Her slender, graceful look and elegant style, often created with the designer Hubert de Givenchy, made her a lasting fashion icon. From 1988 she worked as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, travelling to Africa, Asia and Latin America, and devoted much of her later life to helping children.
