Founding of Torino FC

1906

Torino Football Club is an Italian football club from Turin, founded by a group of members of Juventus who had left that club, with the help of foreign businessmen. It plays in maroon, hence its nickname Granata, and its rivalry with Juventus is known as the Derby della Mole. The club is famous for the Grande Torino of the 1940s, a team that won five league titles in a row and provided most of the players for the national team. In 1949 the whole squad was killed when their plane crashed into the hillside of Superga, near Turin, on the way back from a friendly match in Lisbon, a tragedy that shocked Italy. Torino won the league again in 1976.
