Joan Crawford was born around 1906 in San Antonio. An American actress, Crawford was a leading star of Hollywood for decades, beginning as a dancer and silent film actress and becoming a symbol of glamour in the 1930s. She was reinvented as a dramatic actress in Mildred Pierce, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, and later starred in Possessed, Sudden Fear and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, with her rival Bette Davis. She married four times, including to the actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and later the chairman of Pepsi-Cola. After her death, a memoir by her adopted daughter, Mommie Dearest, damaged her public image.
