The Tokyo Stock Exchange is the main stock market of Japan and one of the largest exchanges in the world. Its origins go back to the Tokyo Stock Exchange founded in 1878 during the Meiji era, and the modern exchange was reestablished in 1949 after the Second World War, when securities trading was reorganized under the supervision of the Allied occupation. Over the following decades it became a central institution of Japan's postwar economic growth, with a huge boom in the 1980s and a sharp collapse in the early 1990s. Trading moved from the floor to a fully electronic system at the end of the twentieth century. In 2013 it merged with the Osaka Securities Exchange to form the Japan Exchange Group.
