Lech Kaczyński was born on 18 June 1949 in Warsaw. A Polish politician and lawyer, Kaczynski was President of Poland from 2005 until his death. A former Solidarity activist, he later served as Minister of Justice and mayor of Warsaw, where he founded the Warsaw Rising Museum. With his identical twin brother Jaroslaw he co-founded the conservative Law and Justice party. As president he took a skeptical line on the European Union and strongly supported close ties with the United States and with the post-Soviet states of the region. He died in a plane crash near Smolensk, Russia, with his wife and dozens of officials, while on the way to a commemoration of the Katyn massacre.
