The World Alliance of YMCAs is the international federation of national YMCAs, the Christian youth organisation that began in London, where George Williams and a group of fellow drapers' assistants formed the Young Men's Christian Association to provide Bible study and a healthy alternative to the dangers of city life. The movement spread across Britain, Europe and North America, and later opened to women, people of all faiths and to a wide range of activities, including sport, education and housing. The YMCA is credited with the invention of basketball and volleyball. The World Alliance is based in Geneva, and works with around a hundred national associations.
