ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, was founded by the Swiss federal government as the Eidgenössische Polytechnische Schule, with the task of training engineers and scientists for the young federal state. Albert Einstein studied there in the late 1890s and later returned as a professor, and Wolfgang Pauli taught there. More than twenty Nobel laureates have been associated with it as students or teachers, including Wilhelm Röntgen, Leopold Ružička, Vladimir Prelog, Richard Ernst and Kurt Wüthrich. It consistently ranks among the best universities in Europe for science and technology. Its sister institution, the EPFL, is in Lausanne.
