Founding of Swiss National Bank

20 June 1907

The Swiss National Bank is the central bank of Switzerland, and it is responsible for the country's monetary policy, for issuing banknotes and for ensuring the stability of the financial system. It was created by federal law and began operations in 1907, after earlier attempts to set up a national bank had failed in popular votes, and took over the note-issuing role of many cantonal banks. The bank has its headquarters in Bern and Zurich. It is a joint-stock company whose shares are owned partly by the cantons and partly by private shareholders. It is known for its large reserves, and for its decision in 2015 to remove the franc's cap against the euro.
