Rachel Carson was born on 27 May 1907 in Rachel Carson Homestead. An American marine biologist and writer, Carson began her career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and wrote lyrical books on the sea, including The Sea Around Us, which was a best-seller. Her book Silent Spring, published in 1962, documented the damage to birds and ecosystems from indiscriminate use of pesticides such as DDT, and helped to launch the modern environmental movement. The chemical industry attacked her, but a presidential advisory committee confirmed her findings, and the US later banned DDT for agricultural use. She was already ill with cancer when the book was published.
