Konrad Adenauer died on 19 April 1967 in Rhöndorf, aged 91. A German statesman, Adenauer was the mayor of Cologne until the Nazis removed him from office in 1933. After the war he helped found the Christian Democratic Union and became the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949 at the age of 73, serving until 1963. He anchored West Germany firmly in the Western camp, bringing it into NATO and into the early European communities, and he worked for reconciliation with France, sealed by the Élysée Treaty of 1963 with Charles de Gaulle. During his tenure the country recovered rapidly in what was called the economic miracle. Critics found his style authoritarian, and he was reluctant to confront the Nazi past.
