Launch of The Wall Street Journal

8 July 1889

The Wall Street Journal is an American daily newspaper focused on business and finance, based in New York. It was first published by Dow Jones & Company, founded by the journalists Charles Dow and Edward Jones with Charles Bergstresser. It grew out of a financial news service for traders on Wall Street and soon published the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which became the best-known stock index. The paper is also known for its long in-depth articles on its front page and for its opinion section. It has won many Pulitzer Prizes. Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation bought it in 2007, and it now has one of the largest circulations of any newspaper in the United States, including a big paid digital readership.
