Edwin Hubble was born on 20 November 1889 in Marshfield. An American astronomer, Hubble transformed the understanding of the universe in the 1920s. Using the large telescope at Mount Wilson, he showed that the Andromeda Nebula and other spiral nebulae lay far outside the Milky Way, proving that our galaxy is just one of many. In 1929 he showed that more distant galaxies recede faster, a relation now called the Hubble-Lemaitre law, which provided key evidence that the universe is expanding. He also devised a classification scheme for galaxies. The Hubble Space Telescope, launched in 1990, is named in his honor.
