Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in Prayagraj. The first prime minister of independent India, Nehru was a lawyer who became a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi and a leader of the Indian National Congress during the struggle against British rule, and was imprisoned many times. He led the country from 1947 until his death, establishing a parliamentary democracy, a policy of secularism and a state-led economy with Five-Year Plans. In foreign affairs he was a founder of the Non-Aligned Movement. His time in office was clouded by the border war with China in 1962. He wrote books, including The Discovery of India, and his daughter Indira Gandhi later became prime minister.
