The National Library of Israel was founded in Jerusalem as a library by Joseph Chazanowicz, a scholar from Białystok, with the support of the B'nai B'rith organization, at first under the name Midrash Abarbanel. It later became the Jewish National Library and was linked with the Hebrew University in the 1920s, with Hugo Bergmann as its first head. It holds the world's largest collections of Judaica and Hebrew-language material, as well as valuable manuscripts, including Newton's theological and alchemical papers, and Albert Einstein left it his personal archive. It moved to the Givat Ram campus in 1960, and it received its present name in 2007.
