Mary Pickford was born on 8 April 1892 in Toronto. A Canadian-born actress and producer, Pickford was one of the first great stars of American film, known as America's Sweetheart and the Girl with the Curls. She began on stage as a child and worked with D. W. Griffith before becoming the highest-paid and most popular actress of the silent era. In 1919 she co-founded United Artists with Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith, giving performers more control over their work. She also helped to found the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Coquette, her first sound film.
