Construction of Paulista Avenue

8 December 1891

Paulista Avenue in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was laid out and inaugurated by the engineer Joaquim Eugenio de Almeida on the high ridge of the city, away from the crowded centre. It was lined with the mansions of wealthy coffee barons, in a residential showcase for the city's new fortunes. During the twentieth century the houses were replaced by office towers, banks and cultural institutions, and the avenue became the city's financial centre. It is home to the Sao Paulo Museum of Art, designed by Lina Bo Bardi, and on Sundays it is closed to cars so that people can walk, cycle and attend events.
