Founding of Ligue 1

1932

Ligue 1 is the top division of professional men's football in France, and it began as a national professional championship, which replaced a system in which the best clubs competed in regional contests. It was first played with twenty teams in two groups, and was later reorganised several times, and it was called Division 1 for most of its history until it was renamed Ligue 1 in the early 2000s. It is run by the Ligue de Football Professionnel. Clubs such as Saint-Etienne, Marseille, Monaco and Lyon have dominated at different times, and since the arrival of Qatari investment, Paris Saint-Germain has won the title most often in recent years.
