Founding of International Peace Bureau

13 November 1891

The International Peace Bureau is one of the oldest international peace organizations, created following a peace congress in Rome as a coordinating centre for the peace societies of Europe and America. Its first offices were in Bern, Switzerland, and it was later based in Geneva. It organized the regular World Peace Congresses and promoted international arbitration and disarmament. Several of its leaders, such as Elie Ducommun, Albert Gobat and Fredrik Bajer, received the Nobel Peace Prize, and the bureau itself was awarded the prize in 1910. Today it works as a federation of peace groups around the world and campaigns for disarmament and conflict prevention.
