Founding of IKEA

28 July 1943

IKEA is a Swedish furniture retailer founded by Ingvar Kamprad, who was a teenager when he started the business in the farming district of Smaland. The name combines his initials with the first letters of Elmtaryd, the family farm, and Agunnaryd, the nearby village. It began by selling small goods by mail order and moved to furniture some years later. IKEA became known for self-assembly flat-pack furniture, which lowered costs and transport charges, and for its large out-of-town stores and annual catalogue. It expanded across Europe and the world, and it is now the largest furniture retailer in the world. Kamprad died in 2018.
