Pervez Musharraf was born on 11 August 1943 in Delhi. A Pakistani general and politician, Musharraf took power in a bloodless coup in 1999 by overthrowing prime minister Nawaz Sharif, and he ruled the country until 2008, serving as president from 2001. After the attacks of September 2001 he aligned Pakistan with the United States in the war on terror, while facing criticism for his policies on militancy. He survived several assassination attempts, declared a state of emergency in 2007 and resigned under threat of impeachment the following year. He later lived in exile and in 2019 was sentenced to death in absentia for treason, a verdict that was later overturned.
