The Hong Kong Stock Exchange traces its origins to 1891, when a group of brokers formed an association to trade shares in the British colony. Over the next century several exchanges operated in Hong Kong, and in 1986 four of them merged into the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong. In 2000 the exchange and its clearing houses were combined into a holding company, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing, which is itself listed. The exchange has become one of the largest in the world, a major gateway for investors into mainland China and a favoured place for Chinese companies to raise capital. It has stock connect schemes that link it with the exchanges of Shanghai and Shenzhen.
