Founding of California Institute of Technology

1891

The California Institute of Technology, known as Caltech, is a private research university in Pasadena, California. It began as a small vocational school called Throop University and grew into a major scientific institution after the astronomer George Ellery Hale and the physicists Arthur Noyes and Robert Millikan helped to turn it into a leading research centre. Caltech is deliberately small but has produced a great number of Nobel laureates. It manages the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for NASA, which builds and operates robotic space missions, and it is a key partner in the LIGO detection of gravitational waves. Its work has been particularly influential in physics, astronomy, geology and engineering.
