Construction of University of California, Santa Barbara

1891

The University of California, Santa Barbara, is a public research university on a coastal campus near Goleta, California, and a member of the University of California system. Its origins lie in a small private school for manual training founded by Anna Blake in Santa Barbara. It later became a state normal school and then a state college, before being incorporated into the University of California. In the 1950s the campus was moved to its present site, a former military base on a bluff above the Pacific Ocean. UCSB is known for research in physics, materials science, marine science and the environment, and its faculty and alumni include several Nobel laureates.
