Birth of Buster Keaton

4 October 1895

Buster Keaton was born on 4 October 1895 in Piqua. An American actor, comedian and director, Keaton was one of the greatest stars of silent film, nicknamed the Great Stone Face for his deadpan expression. A veteran of vaudeville from early childhood, he starred in and directed films such as Sherlock Jr., The General and Steamboat Bill, Jr., which combined inventive gags with daring stunts that he performed himself. His career declined with the arrival of sound and the loss of his creative independence at MGM, and struggles with alcohol. He later made a comeback in cameo roles, television and the film Limelight, and received an honorary Academy Award.
