Charles University in Prague is the oldest and largest university in the Czech Republic and one of the oldest in Europe. It was founded by a royal charter issued by Charles IV, who was king of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, and it was the first university in Central Europe. It was modelled on the universities of Paris and Bologna. Jan Hus, who taught and was rector there, became a central figure in the Bohemian Reformation. When the German students and masters left in 1409 after a dispute over voting rights, many went to found the University of Leipzig. The university was divided into Czech and German parts in the nineteenth century, and the Nazis closed Czech universities in 1939.
