The University of Tubingen is a public research university in the town of Tubingen in Baden-Wurttemberg, southwestern Germany. It was founded in 1477 by Count Eberhard of Wurttemberg, known as Eberhard im Bart, and is one of the oldest universities in Germany. In the sixteenth century it became a centre of Protestant theology, and its seminary, the Tubinger Stift, trained many famous thinkers, including the philosophers Hegel and Schelling and the poet Holderlin, who shared a room there as students. The astronomer Johannes Kepler also studied at Tubingen. Today the university is known for strengths in medicine, the humanities and the natural sciences.
