Muhammad was born on 20 April 571 CE in Mecca. An Arabian religious and political leader, Muhammad is regarded by Muslims as the last prophet of God and is the founder of Islam. According to Islamic tradition he was born in Mecca and began to receive revelations, which were later collected in the Qur'an, around the age of forty. Facing opposition in Mecca, he and his followers migrated to Medina in 622, an event that marks the start of the Islamic calendar. He then united much of the Arabian Peninsula under the new community before his death at Medina. His example and sayings are the basis of the Sunnah, which guides Muslims worldwide.
