Founding of University of Vienna

12 March 1365

The University of Vienna is a public university in the Austrian capital and one of the oldest in the German-speaking world. It was established in 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV of the House of Habsburg, who wished to give his lands a university comparable to those of Prague and Paris. At first it had no faculty of theology, as the pope did not approve one, and this was added later in the century. Over the centuries the university grew into a major centre of learning, especially in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when figures such as Sigmund Freud, Ludwig Boltzmann and Erwin Schrodinger worked or studied there. It remains one of the largest universities in Europe.
