Karlstejn Castle is a Gothic castle about thirty kilometres southwest of Prague, founded by Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, to serve as a safe place for the imperial crown jewels and a collection of holy relics. It was designed by the French architect Matthias of Arras, who died soon after work began, and the project was continued by others. The castle is built in several levels, with the Great Tower at the top housing the Chapel of the Holy Cross, whose walls are covered with precious stones and a series of panel paintings by Master Theodoric. The castle was restored in the nineteenth century, and the crown jewels were later moved to Prague.
