Founding of Boston University

1869

Boston University is a private research university in Boston, Massachusetts, with roots in a Methodist theological school that was established in the 1830s. It received its university charter in 1869, and early on it admitted women and Black students on equal terms with men, which was unusual for the time. Alexander Graham Bell taught at the university while developing his work on the telephone, and Martin Luther King Jr. earned his doctorate in theology there in 1955. Its campus runs for several kilometres along the Charles River, and it is one of the largest private universities in the United States by enrolment. It has strong programmes in medicine, law, communications and engineering.
