Grigori Rasputin was born on 9 January 1869 in Pokrovskoye. A Siberian peasant and self-styled holy man, Rasputin gained influence at the Russian imperial court in the early twentieth century because the Tsarina Alexandra believed that he could relieve the suffering of her son Alexei, who had hemophilia. His access to the family and rumors of scandal damaged the standing of Nicholas II, especially during the First World War, and he was widely hated by nobles and in the press. A group of aristocrats, including Prince Felix Yusupov, murdered him in Petrograd. Many legends have grown around his death, but the basic facts are well documented.
