Founding of BirdLife International

1922

BirdLife International is a global partnership of conservation organisations working to protect birds and their habitats. It was founded as the International Council for Bird Preservation by conservationists, including the American naturalist T. Gilbert Pearson, and adopted the name BirdLife International in the 1990s. Its partners include national groups, such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds in Britain. It maintains the official assessment of the conservation status of the world's birds for the IUCN Red List, and it has identified thousands of Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas that guide conservation planning. It has helped to protect threatened species through campaigns, research and habitat purchase.
