Founding of Australia men's national soccer team

1922

The Australia men's national soccer team, nicknamed the Socceroos, represents Australia in international football. Its first official matches were played in the early 1920s, against New Zealand. Australia first qualified for the World Cup in 1974, and then did not appear again until 2006, when it reached the second round, losing narrowly to the eventual champions, Italy. Since then it has qualified for each tournament. In 2006 Australia moved from the Oceania Football Confederation to the Asian Football Confederation, which gave it tougher competition, and it won the AFC Asian Cup as host in 2015. In the 2022 World Cup it reached the round of sixteen, where it lost to Argentina.
