Sigrid Undset was born on 20 May 1882 in Kalundborg. A Norwegian novelist, Undset is best known for Kristin Lavransdatter, a trilogy set in fourteenth-century Norway that follows a woman's life from childhood to death with deep historical detail and psychological insight. She also wrote the tetralogy The Master of Hestviken and many other novels, essays and stories. She converted to Catholicism in 1924, which influenced her later work. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1928. A fierce opponent of Nazism, she fled Norway after the German invasion in 1940, living in the United States until the war ended.
